Leadership Development

As part of its mission to develop academic leadership, the Center for Faculty Advancement (CFA) is committed to offering professional development throughout the faculty lifecycle. Through its partnerships with Academic Impressions, NYU Office of Human Resources, NYU Office of Equal Opportunity, NYU Steinhardt Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools, and its own Early Career Faculty Institute and Mid-Career Faculty Initiative, the CFA offers a range of leadership development opportunities to faculty, as well as faculty-administrators, and other higher education leaders across campus.

Programs & Services

Academic Impressions. Faculty have access to both in-person and online resources that provide leadership, personal development, and skills-based workshop opportunities to faculty and staff in higher ed. Academic Impressions caters to a variety of needs of faculty across the university, and provides tools to become leaders in their respective departments, programs, offices, and/or administrative units. Workshop topics have included Faculty Leadership at All Levels, Equity Minded Leadership Institute, Women’s Leadership Success in Higher Education, and a Virtual Writing Cafe, among others. All NYU faculty members may access Academic Impressions services by creating an account on the Academic Impressions website using your “@nyu.edu” email address. Please note, you must log into your account before selecting the webcasts of interest.

Mid-Career Faculty Initiative (MCFI). Created by the Center for Faculty Advancement (CFA), the MCFI is a mentoring program that concentrates on the unique challenges that mid-career faculty face in building programs, departments, and institutes; leading initiatives; and nurturing the next generation while also advancing their own careers. Incorporated into the mentoring program is the development of academic leadership capacity, in particular coaching and leadership training in coordination with our external partner Academic Impressions.

National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD). Faculty have access to evidence-based professional development and mentoring resources that support research, teaching, and career goals, particularly for those from underrepresented groups. The NCFDD caters to a variety of faculty needs across all career stages, and provides tools for productivity, grant writing, career advancement, and fostering inclusive academic communities. Resource topics include strategies for work-life balance, effective mentoring practices, research proposal development, and navigating tenure and promotion, among others. All NYU faculty members may access NCFDD services by creating an account on the NCFDD website. To set up your account, select “Become a Member,” then navigate to “Activate Your Institutional Membership Account” and select NYU. Use your NYU username and password as your login. Please note: Faculty must log into their account before accessing the available resources.
