ECFI/MCFI Writing Salon

The Salon aims to support faculty as they systematically plan their writing goals.

The ECFI/MCFI NYC Writing Salon is a faculty writing community at NYU developed to support faculty in prioritizing writing to realize scholarship and publication goals. The writing salons provide structure, fostering a culture of accountability and enhancing productivity.

The Writing Salon program provides intellectual spaces where peers and experts from across NYU support each other as accountability and thought partners, as well as mentors. The Writing Salon serves as an incubator where the iterative learnings from the mentoring program curricula are integrated into a focused writing practicum—allowing for application of strategies for academic time maximization, writing, publishing, and project development and amplification. It also offers dedicated spaces and resources for focused writing.

Annual Global Site Intensive Retreat

During a one-week immersive program at an NYU global site, participants work with faculty to explore writing strategies, implement best practices, conduct self-assessments, and participate in group exercises that map and visualize their development. Guest experts from NYU NYC equip participants with resources and tools for writing success, engaging diverse audiences and amplifying scholarly impact.

Key activities

  • Four-hour blocks of uninterrupted writing time per day
  • Accountability partners and peer-to-peer check-ins
  • Conversations on writing styles and barriers to “getting started” with Associate Vice Provost Niyati Parekh
  • Guest experts from NYU New York
  • Virtual 1–1 consultations with NYU Press
  • Small group discussions and 1–1 consultations with Dr. Parekh
  • Final presentation of projects

Open Writing Hours

Participants in the Writing Salon are invited to join faculty colleagues at Open Writing Hours— regularly scheduled sessions offered by the Center for Faculty Advancement on Fridays throughout the semester. Participants may choose to attend one or all of the sessions. They may stay for the entire time or a portion of the writing session.

Testimonials

This was an extraordinary and magical experience. The most life-changing part of the whole thing was the new friends and colleagues I made. I had enlightening and deep conversations about our work and the world, and also so much joy and laughter. I’ve never written in community before, and it was motivating and inspiring to be in a room with such a wide-ranging variety of experts in so many different fields.

Truly life-changing. One of the most well-organized and invigorating things I’ve done in my professional life of over 15 years.

This trip was absolutely wonderful. I made major progress on my writing projects, and developed ideas to come back and work with the site director and students on future projects. This really succeeded in breaking down silos at NYU and helping me get to know faculty I am certain I would not have met otherwise.

This was an absolutely amazing trip! I fell in love with the city, and I got a lot of writing done. It was crucial for me as someone with a lot of administrative and parenting responsibilities to have the protected time.

Testimonials

This is a great opportunity for me to understand from all the speakers and participants how we all are in the same boat until we succeed. The environment helped me to structure myself, set a timeline with goals, develop a ritual to follow until it gets to a final stage. Now I am motivated to write a book.

It was helpful to hear other’s projects and their concerns. It helped me figure out what I like about writing and encouraged me to do more of it. I was able to separate from my day-to-day concerns, tasks, and responsibilities and focus on one thing.

Testimonials

Faculty and Faculty Fellows who traveled to Tel Aviv unanimously agreed that having protected writing time allowed them to be productive, and concurred that working alongside peers from several disciplines was beneficial for them.

I enjoyed the program very much, and the overall atmosphere was pleasant and conducive to writing.

Really wonderful experience. I loved being pulled out of my busy schedule to focus on what is really important—we need more of these moments not only to improve work–life balance but also to be more productive.

Everything about this workshop was excellent. I wish we had more days to do this. 🙂

LOVED the communal environment; brainstorming together for writing strategies was very helpful; assessing one’s relationship to writing and sharing that with the group.
