Kaelin Rapport received his PhD in cultural anthropology in 2024. His research broadly examines how carceral expansion through criminal justice reform, Black men’s experiences navigating carceral geographies, surveillance technology, and chronic illness and disability in the United States. He highlights the voices and experiences of those directly impacted by contemporary legal systems to question the types of expertise marshaled to justify the use of alternative correction methods, such as ‘race-blind’ data, ‘evidence-based practices’, and ‘unbiased’ technology. The Ford Foundation National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the Social Science Research Council, and the Science and Human Culture program at Northwestern University have generously funded his work.
