Dr. Pamela Zabala Ortiz is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Boston University. She is a sociologist of race and migration, and her research interests include race making; identity and belonging; and transnational constructions of race with a focus on Blackness and Latinidad. Her book project, titled “Black, but ‘not Black,’” focuses on how Blackness is understood and constructed in the US today, and whether and how Afro-Latines fit into those constructions. A Mellon Mays Fellow, Pamela received her PhD (2024) and Masters (2021) degrees in Sociology from Duke University and her BA in Sociology and Africana Studies from Bowdoin College.
