Joslyn Gardner is a PhD candidate in the Department of French and Italian at Emory University, where she is a Centennial Scholar fellow. She also pursues a certificate in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. She holds a BA in Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies-French from Pomona College and an MA in French from Emory University. Her research puts black feminist thought in conversation with francophone African and Caribbean literatures and visual arts. She is currently writing her dissertation titled “Beautiful Camouflage: A Black Feminist Archive of the Wreck.” Her article “Maud Sulter’s Image-Making: The Rising of Jeanne Duval’s Ka” was published in Callaloo (43(1), 2025). She co-founded and co-runs the Emory Black Feminist Working Group. She is also a member of Emory’s Caribbean Studies Working Group. In recognition of her effort to build support networks across disciplines, Laney Graduate School awarded her the Inclusive Excellence Award in April 2026.
