Research matters—especially when people can understand why and how it matters.

Faculty Write helps NYU faculty translate their research and expertise into accessible, persuasive writing for the public. Through interactive workshops, faculty learn to craft compelling pieces that bring evidence and ideas into public conversations on today’s most pressing issues.
Led by the Office of the Provost in partnership with the Office of Public Affairs, Faculty Write offers practical training in writing to broad audiences. Sessions are facilitated by the Office of Public Affairs, media professionals, and faculty from the NYU Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, who provide real-world insight into how to develop, pitch, frame, and publish opinion pieces that resonate beyond academia.
Over the course of the program, participants:
- Develop and workshop a full 700- to 900-word piece (op-ed, commentaries) based on their research, expertise, or teaching.
- Learn strategies for identifying news hooks, crafting arguments, and writing in a clear, engaging, and non-technical voice.
Explore how to position their work for particular publications and audiences. - Receive detailed feedback from peer faculty and journalism professionals in small-group sessions.
- Join a growing network of NYU scholars committed to public scholarship and research communication.
Faculty Write culminates with the submission of a polished opinion piece, ready for placement in a relevant outlet. Faculty leave the program with a deeper understanding of how to make their research resonate beyond academia and connect with public interests, and the tools and confidence to continue doing so. Faculty Write participants are selected through an annual application and review process. Learn more
Testimonials from past workshops
Faculty Write has empowered me to seek out broader audiences for my research and to be unafraid to translate complex ideas into narrative and policy points to engage with the public.
I have already incorporated the wisdom shared in the program in the way I present my work at non-academic conferences and even when talking to prospective students.
I often think about public-facing writing, but found it hard to approach. The fellowship provided me with ample tools to develop public writing habits/skills. It was also a wonderful way to meet colleagues from across schools and programs. As a relatively new faculty member, it helped me understand the range of supports available to NYU faculty to publish public scholarship. The additional aspects, such as media training and pitching op-eds, strengthened my understanding of the process, and I leave this experience ready to write more publicly. I am so heartened knowing my institution supports these endeavors.
The Faculty Write program provided a supportive structure to step outside of academic writing and think of creative and engaging ways to share my research with the general public. Through this wonderful opportunity, I was able to create, submit, and successfully publish an op-ed at the Mercury News advocating for more inclusive practices in the music classroom.
This program demystified the process of writing an op-ed. Through carefully curated talks and materials, I gained essential tools to translate my research for a broader audience. The cohort group provided the structure and accountability to actually sit down and write my piece. I highly recommend this to any faculty member looking to amplify their voice.
The Faculty Write program helped me to see myself as someone who has a platform and just needs to learn to stand on it. It also helped me to see writing as a way to extend the broader impact of my work by reaching new audiences.
