Jermaine R. Howell (he/him) is a PhD candidate in the Curriculum, Instruction, and Teacher Education program at Michigan State University (MSU). His research focuses on equity and justice-oriented pedagogies in mathematics education.
He has served as the Chief Diversity Officer for the International Student Association at MSU. In this role, Jermaine collaborated with university leaders on multicultural and diversity initiatives to support the well-being of international students on campus. Jermaine currently serves as a mentor for undergraduate and graduate students in the Teacher Education Department at MSU. Within the College of Education at MSU, Jermaine has organized and facilitated several communities of practice with faculty members, staff, and graduate students that focused on culturally relevant pedagogy and justice-oriented practices in teaching and research.
Prior to pursuing his doctorate at MSU, Jermaine served as a global educator and an elementary school teacher in Jamaica and North Carolina. While teaching in North Carolina, he was awarded Teacher of the Year for his school and was a Teacher of the Year district finalist for the Wake County Public School System. Jermaine holds a Bachelor of Education degree in Primary Education (K-6) from the International University of the Caribbean, Jamaica, and a Master of Education degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Developmental Supervision from North Carolina State University.
