María Ximena Dávila is a PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research interests encompass the sociology of sex and gender, the sociology of reproduction, political sociology, and the sociology of family. She holds a BA in Law and an MA in Sociology from Universidad de los Andes (Bogotá, Colombia). Prior to her PhD, María worked for several years as a women’s rights lawyer in Colombia, where she advocated for the defense of sexual and reproductive rights. Drawing on this experience, her current research explores the contemporary politics of reproduction in contexts affected by humanitarian and environmental crises. Through ethnographic and participatory methods, she seeks to connect the intimate realm of family and reproductive life with social phenomena like war, climate change, and mass displacement. Her work has been generously funded by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), the Mellon Foundation, the American Sociological Association (ASA), and the Latin American Studies Association (LASA), among others.
